Transcripts (2024)
Assemblage of reclaimed fabric and found handwritten notes,
shopping lists, letters, and envelopes.
A3, documented as a scan.
Over three years in the UK, the artist gathered notes and lists found in supermarkets and public places, received by hand, or arriving on envelopes from strangers. Beside them sits fabric that had already been used before she found it, unpicked stitch by stitch and pieced back together. Every element has passed through hands she will never meet.
A transcript is a written copy of spoken words, yet nothing here was spoken, and lists are rarely read aloud. What these materials record instead is the unseen time and effort of daily life: the thinking behind a list, the care in a note, the physical work of sewing and unpicking. The lines of the fabric run on into the lines of handwriting, setting the stitch and the written word side by side as parallel records of a moving hand.
In keeping with her practice of reuse, the assemblage exists only temporarily. Its materials move on into new works, and the scan remains as its transcript.
