Existence (2019)

Audio-visual installation. Wooden frame, bedding, and two projectors.

This work explores the interplay between waking and dreaming states, drawing on a four-year dream logbook as part of its methodology. Informed by scientific research on dreaming, the installation was inspired by questions such as: Does dreaming help process waking experiences, or does it serve as preparation for waking life?

An upturned bed frame in a darkened space serves as a two-sided screen. Each side is illuminated by a separate projector, with randomised visuals that blend at the centre. This central image symbolises the convergence of the conscious and subconscious mind. The research included investigating how the brain processes visual stimuli, the function of dreams, and the relevance of dream states — with the Trichromatic Theory of Colour Vision playing a key role in shaping the final form.

The visuals are accompanied by a pre-recorded soundtrack of the artist's heartbeat. Rather than presenting a narrative, the installation favours abstraction, using colour and fragmented dream imagery to evoke the emotional atmosphere of various dreams. This approach invites viewers to engage subjectively with the work, experiencing the artist's dream world without being directed by a fixed interpretation.
